The Brief

The 80,000 sq ft warehouse was half racked and half heated by 8 high level gas fired unit heaters, supplemented by roof-mounted de-stratification fans. The client wanted to rack out the remaining half of the warehouse and heat it in similar fashion.

The Solution

Adding further heaters and fans would indeed have achieved the objective of effectively heating the warehouse, but we felt we could offer a much more efficient long term solution. We therefore proposed removing the existing heaters and fans then replacing them with a single air rotation heater, centrally on the front wall in the alleyway between the two sets of racking. This proven system allows uniformity in the distribution of heated air and reduces the effects of de-stratification for even temperature levels throughout the warehouse. Energy usage was significantly reduced, despite the 24 hour operation and further savings were made possible on servicing costs as the previous multiple heater / fan system was no longer in use.

The Brief

The company was running printing machines for 24 hours a day and consequently giving off a lot of heat. This was beneficial in winter, but not in the summer months when production, productivity and staff welfare all suffered. In addition the poorly insulated building fabric led to solar heat gain and lack of air movement, all combining to make for an uncomfortable working environment.

The Solution

Following a thorough assessment of the premises, we installed 2 EcoCooling evaporative cooling units on wall brackets on the exterior of the building. These coolers discharge fresh cool air locally, where it is needed, by two ranges of ductwork. The fact that this air is humid is a particular advantage in a printing works, as very dry air is not beneficial. Two extract ventilation fans were also installed to ensure a good air change rate within the building. The customer received an interest free loan from the Carbon Trust for the installation.

The Brief

This company produced 3-4 tonnes of wood waste per month in the form of sawdust and off-cuts, which had to be disposed of by skip. Expansion meant that another large building was required for production. To heat this would normally require either a gas supply to be introduced for gas fired heating or an oil tank and pipework for oil fired heating.

The Solution

We installed a Talbott T3/A automatic wood waste burning system. Off-cuts are placed into a shredder, which cuts solid wood into 15mm chips and deposits them into a storage hopper. This acts both as a storage vessel and also feeds, via a screw feed operation, the wood burning system, which in turn heats the factory for free during cold periods with warm blown air. In summer, heat produced can be discharged to the atmosphere. The customer therefore saves on both heating and wood disposal costs, to the extent that the installation will pay for itself in 2-3 years. In addition, the customer also received an interest free loan from the Carbon Trust.
